  5. INSTALLATION
  6. ------------

  8. In order to install FmView and add it to the Windows Explorer simply 
  9. copy all the files in this package to your FmView directory. If you 
  10. don't have one yet then make one and be sure to copy all the files 
  11. contained in the FmView 1.2 package. This package can be downloaded from 
  12. the CIS forum WINSHARE, keyword FMVIEW. Then run the INST95.EXE program 
  13. from the Explorer or the File Manager.

  18. To deinstall FmView simply run the install program again.
  19.  
  20. WHAT IS FMVIEW
  21. --------------
  22.  
  23. FmView extends the Windows 95 Explorer, so you can display the contents 
  24. of the currently selected file. Simply select the FmView menu item in 
  25. the context menu of ANY file and FmView automatically determines the 
  26. file format. More than 60 file formats are supported, including MOST 
  27. graphics (BMP, GIF), archive (ZIP, ARJ), document (DOC, WRI) and 
  28. spreadsheet (XLS, WK4) formats. Text files can be edited. Incremental 
  29. search to easily find text.

  31. USING FMVIEW
  32. ------------

  34. To use FmView simply select any file in the Explorer window, My 
  35. Computer, File Selection Dialog, or the Windows 95 Desktop with the 
  36. alternate mouse button. Then select the FmView menu item from the 
  37. context menu that appears. This will open up the FmView window or update 
  38. the contents in the previously opened FmView window.

  40. FmView also adds a second menu item to the context menu called Copy Name 
  41. that allows you to copy the complete file name of the currently selected 
  42. file to the Windows clipboard.

  44. ADVANCED CONFIGURATION
  45. ----------------------

  47. You can change the menu title that will be used for the FmView entry. In 
  48. the [FmView] section of fmview.ini in your Windows directory add or 
  49. change the following line:
  50.  
  51. MenuTitleExplorer=&FmView
  52.  
  53. The ampersand indicates that the following character will be used as 
  54. accelerator key. You can also change the title for the Copy Name entry:
  55.  
  56. MenuTitleExplorerCopy=Cop&y Name
  57.  
  58. You can make the item disappear completely if you specify an empty 
  59. string.
  60.  
  61. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  62. --------------

  64. The Copy Name menu item puts the Explorer into edit mode. This is not 
  65. done on purpose. To leave the edit mode again press ESC so the item 
  66. remains unchanged. This behavior is probably caused by a bug in 
  67. Explorer. Other extensions don't seem to have this problem because they 
  68. are only registered for files of a certain file extension and not for 
  69. all files like FmView.

  71. There is no hot key yet that opens up the FmView window. I don't know if 
  72. and how I should incorporate something like that. There is no documented 
  73. way to get the file name of the currently selected item unless the 
  74. extension is invoked thru a menu item. I'll think of something. Let me 
  75. know whether you think a hot key is required or not.

  77. HINT HINT: In the mean time you can use this easy work around: Press 
  78. Shift+F10 (this pops up the context menu) and then press F (this chooses 
  79. the FmView menu item).

  82. WHAT THE INSTALLER DOES AND DOES NOT DO
  83. ---------------------------------------

  85. This install program will make all the additions to your system registry 
  86. required to hook up the FmView with the Explorer. It does not copy any 
  87. files. The install program will also apply a minor patch in the existing 
  88. fmview.dll, so this file should not be read only or in a write protected 
  89. directory. The patch is not absolutely necessary to use FmView with 
  90. Explorer. FmView will of course remain usable with Windows 3.X or NT.

  92. REGISTRATION
  93. ------------

  95. New unregistered users only have to register FmView 1.2 or later. They 
  96. will receive a code for this Explorer version of FmView automatically 
  97. and no extra fee is required. See the help file for details on how to 
  98. register.

  100. FmView for the Explorer is also free for all registered users of FmView 
  101. 1.2 or later that have registered in August 1995 or later. It is also 
  102. free for users who have contributed to the development of FmView by 
  103. ordering a support disk for either version 1.2 of FmView or the release 
  104. following that, or by paying the 8 DM support fee. All of these users 
  105. should have received an additional personal registration code with their 
  106. upgrade notification or registration. If you have obtained this file 
  107. faster than my upgrade notification could reach you then please contact 
  108. me for the code. All other registered FmView users can obtain their 
  109. personal code by paying US-$5 (or 8 DM). Send the regular registration 
  110. form from the help file and cross out the "25 DM" and write down "8 DM 
  111. Explorer Version". VISA/MC and US checks accepted.

  113. You can also pay thru CompuServe's SWREG service. The fee is then $10 
  114. since CIS doesn't allow lower amounts. I get about $8 of that. Simply GO 
  115. SWREG and follow the instructions. The ID is 7440.

  117. Please note that this is a pre-release version and the first regular 
  118. release of FmView for the Explorer will be bundled with the next release 
  119. of FmView. At the moment I felt that there are not enough new features 
  120. to justify a new release of FmView. All users that have ordered disks 
  121. will receive their disks when the next release is available. I will only 
  122. notify those users that are able to download this pre-release.
